More than 2,000 pieces of work viewed by family and friends at art show grand opening.
The gymnasium at the Hewlett-East Rockaway Jewish Centre looked more like a magical forest of art than a place for playing sports on Wednesday evening. Artwork made by all nine classes at the centre's nursery school lined the walls and crowded the floor as part of the school's annual art show. The theme for the evening was "celebrating the art of food." "We wanted to incorporate something that the children would understand," Nursery School Director Cheryl Karp said. The food theme came about, in part, because of the Jewish Centre's year-long Torah-writing celebration. "We decided to call it 'a taste of Torah,'" Karp said. "In every [portion] that's written, there's a little bit about food. There's always food throughout Judaism." …

Musical provides laughs and medieval fun on Friday night.
The Lynbrook Middle School general purpose room was transformed into a medieval castle on Friday night. It was there that the school’s drama club put on a production of Once Upon a Mattress for a capacity crowd. The musical was a comedic adaptation of the classic Hans Christian Anderson tale, The Princess and The Pea. The story portrays Prince Dauntless the Drab’s search for a wife. His match - finding success rate, severely diminished by his overbearing mother - Queen Aggravain, begins to turn around when Dauntless meets Princess Winnifred the Woebegone. Not wanting Dauntless to marry Winnifred, the Queen devises a nearly impossible test for the prospective suitor. If the princess can feel a pea under 20 mattresses, she can marry …

Famous Five Towns "mish" could be featured on a future season.
The "mish," essentially a chopped salad, is a well-known Five Towns' favorite that could one day end up on the Travel Channel's Bizarre Foods with host Andrew Zimmern. Zimmern recently spoke with Stacey Sweet, where the former Patch personality grilled him on his knowledge of Long Island eating. While Zimmern has tried everything from reindeer pizza to bull rectum, he had never heard of the mish, but said he would gladly give it a shot. "I would love to," Zimmern told Sweet of trying the mish. "I get there every summer so that would be fun." The mish is a staple of the Chateau Coffee Shop located in Woodmere. The new season of Bizarre Foods will premiere on Monday, Jan. 23, at 10 p.m. on the Travel Channel. Read the whole interview here.

Mayor William Hendrick and Assemblyman Brian Curran said they have found a developer to lease the vacant properties on Atlantic Avenue in Lynbrook.
Vacant storefronts have been underneath the Lynbrook LIRR station for nearly 14 years, but a deal made earlier this month may change that. Lynbrook Village Mayor William Hendrick recently announced that the town has found a developer willing to enter into a lease for the properties, after the LIRR approved the developer's proposal. "After all this time, we were able to find the right developer who would help revitalize our village, become part of our Lynbrook family, and bring us into the 21st century," Henrick said. The vacant properties used to be Picker Pharmacy and Mur-Lees, but both relocated to different addresses on Atlantic Avenue years ago, Hendrick said. The rail road originally wanted the lease go to five to eight years, but …
