In seeking to find a solution to the economic woes, both on the Federal and State levels, pensions have been singled out as a major contributor to the problem. Now, while I’ll admit that there are some excessive pensions and abuses, which should be addressed and reformed, it is all legal.
The reality is that those who think pensions are the problem are barking up the wrong tree. In fact, very little has been said in regard to, what I think is, a better solution. The way our economic system operates, the honest absorb the brunt of an ever increasing tax burden because tax revenues are simply not sufficient.
I believe the solution lies in addressing the underground economy. Sometimes called the shadow economy, it is an ever growing economy outside of the tax structure. Just the legal, but unreported, underground economy was estimated to be $2 trillion in 2010. That’s unreported, non-taxed money, enough to more than cover our country’s debt under Obama’s proposed budget! That figure is not including the illegal market such as drugs and prostitution, etc. As the International Monetary Fund reported in a Mar.2002,article, “Hiding in the Shadows”, by Schneider and Enste:
“Transactions in the shadow, rather than the official, economy keep state revenues lower than they otherwise would be, and in turn reduce the government’s ability to provide goods and services. Governments may respond by raising individual and corporate tax rates.”, which leads to tax increases for the honest. So it would be wiser, fairer, and more profitable for the government to crack down on the “under-the-table” illegal business than to penalize the honest workers who have legitimately earned their pensions! The IMF article by Schneider and Enste also noted:
“Shadow economies tend to be smaller in countries where government institutions are strong and efficient. Indeed, some studies have found that it is not the higher taxes per se that increase the size of the shadow economy, but ineffectual and discretionary application of the tax system and regulations by governments.”
Our government should expedite the matter of making illegal aliens, legal, so they can contribute to the tax base. Also, the next time that individual, whether construction worker, plumber, landscaper, oil company or whomever, offers your two prices- the cheaper cash price (which will not be reported) or the check price (which will),we need to stop and think. Short term we may save a few dollars, but by contributing to the underground economy we are agreeing to pay more taxes- his taxes! The illegal two-family homes (the bane of suburbia) is unreported, untaxed income.
However, this is not just an economic issue. It is a moral issue as well. The Bible has much to say about honesty and money. In fact, Jesus Himself paid taxes (Matthew 17:25-27) although I would not encourage anyone to try to duplicate His method. The Apostle Paul writes in Romans ,
“Give everyone what you owe him: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue;...”
And in Proverbs 11:1 we read;
“The Lord abhors dishonest scales, but accurate weights are His delight.”
Not only should we all blow the whistle on every one of those who engage in this rampant and illegal activity, they should understand that they are engaged in a sinful practice and should repent. And lets stop straining gnats and swallowing camels and leave the honest workers who pay taxes alone. Their pensions are not the real problem, only a casualty of the underground economy.

this article is beyond ignorant. I am sorry Rev. but the issue is in fact pensions. Write to any economist and they will tell you what is hampering the economy is not the uncollected taxes from the unbelievably rich but the overly generous health plans and pensions systems created. The economy could be in full steam already if we did not have unions who refuse to budge one inch to help out.

No need to stoop to personal attacks, which hinders civil dialogue, just say you strongly disagree. Besides, I never said it was uncollected taxes from the unbelievably rich. The underground economy includes all unreported, uncollected taxes period.

Indeed Reverend Bob, Indeed!
After reading your Op-Ed piece the title left me wondering if you were speaking of the Pension System itself or the people it serves. If it’s the latter than you’re correct as the national conversation has descended into just another divisive discussion pitting one segment of the population against another that being Public vs. Private. While we are busy picking sides and arguing amongst one another we are distracted from the real issue and that is the Pension System itself. The system as it is currently designed with all its future liabilities is unsustainable, it is a mathematical impossibility. Many State Pension Plans are grossly unfunded if not insolvent and we as a society have yet to feel the true weight of this burden. Another equally troubling fact is that all Plans rely on Capital Market returns to offset contributions and taxes, hardly a sound model to rely on as many found out in 2009. I have posted a link with information regarding New York’s Pension System and it is considered to be in the top 5 as it relates to funding, for your review;

To your point regarding the “Shadow Economy” that could be solved immediately by abandoning the current “Income Tax System” in its entirety and enact a National and State Consumption Tax. As for the rest of your Op-Ed, well I’m glad we’re all entitled to our opinion!
Keep up the good Lord’s work,
Respectfully,

Bravo Tom,
The consumption or flat tax as you will would be a windfall as tax cheats would immediately be eliminated. My self, I believe this is a astronomical figure.Not to mention streamlining the IRS greatly.

Thanks Tom for your irenic and informative response. I did not mean to gloss over pensions as A problem but not THE problem. Reform is indeed needed but I feel the underground economy issue is more the root cause of much of our economic woes. Perhaps you are right about the Consumption Tax. Anything that would eliminate the illegal, off-the-books economy.
Blessings,
Re. Bob

Hi Rev,
Regarding the illegals Rev, Obamacare adds them into the mix as fully entitled.
We can't afford it if we want to continue a quality of life close to what we've been enjoying.
The taxpayer will not stand for anymore as the Wall Street protest depict.
We're not exempt for protests and outcry presently going on in Greece and other parts of Europe
Once the taxpayer begins his revolt all hell will break loose in our own country. The Wall street protests are being backed by big money and in my opinion will be the precursor to taxpayer revolt never seen before.

Sure, Health Care reform will be unaffordable. Not necessarily true at all. Fact is, Health Care costs have skyrocketed way past the rate of inflation for many years now. It is crippling the US Economy. Private Employers and employees cannot afford the skyrocketing costs. To do nothing, is absolutely not a solution. Who do you think pays for everyone on medicaid now? It is the US taxpayer. So, you have a choice, we pay it, or we deny citizens health care, sometimes could be life threatening. This would then be Health Care rationing. The alternative is some type of reform, whether you like Obama's or something else. If you don't like Obama's plan, fine, then what is your solution to this major problem? Unfortunately, Obama's opponents usually offer no answer to that, other than to trash his plan.

Rev,
Amnesty????? What about the many who respect our laws? Those highly educated foreigners who must leave the country when their visa expires and rightly do so?
Once you begin a precedent as amnesty, where will it end........ and our laws will never be respected again.
If these aliens want citizenship they can go back and file accordingly getting online like everyone else!
