NIFA Nixes Nassau Sewer Deal

A weekly look-in at the news of Nassau County.

The Nassau Interim Finance Authority (NIFA) on Thursday rejected County Executive Ed Mangano's proposed contract with Morgan Stanley to broker a deal for a privatized sewer system. The deal would have paid the financial service firm at least $5 million to broker a deal for the county with a private operator for the sewer system and an investor who would fund the transaction. According to Long Island Business News: The contract, approved by the Nassau Legislature April 16, would have retained Morgan Stanley to find an investor that would lend the county upward of $750 million in exchange for making a profit from running the county’s failing sewer system. Fallen Officers Honored at Nassau Police Memorial

Ceremony honored "Nassau's Finest" who made the supreme sacrifice.

Fallen Nassau County Police Department officers were honored during a solemn ceremony Thursday in Mineola.  Police and county officials recognized all deceased members of the department, which coincided with Police Week in Nassau County. The event featured a placement of floral tributes for all 32 NCPD members who made the supreme sacrifice. The Nassau County Police Memorial, which was first dedicated on May 12, 1982, features a massive stone monolith that displays two Bronze plaques. Village Announces Patriots' Weekend

The two-day event will include fireworks and a parade on Memorial Day weekend.

The Village of Lynbrook's Recreation Department has announced it schedule for the 2012 Patriots' Weekend celebration. The two-day event will take place on Sunday, May 27, and Monday, May 28, at Greis Park. The schedule is as follows: Sunday, May 27 According to the recreation department, there will be a special veterans' VIP tent at Greis Park for all attending veterans. The veterans' dinner is sponsored by Atria Tanglewood. The Lynbrook Pool will be open for all Lynbrook Village Residents between the hours of 3:00pm to 7:30pm with identification and proof of residency. Garden City Girls Lax Tops Lynbrook in Quarterfinals

Big 18-2 victory sends Trojans to Adelphi for semis.

The Garden City Trojans girls lacrosse team's state title defense continued Thursday afternoon with an 18-2 victory over the Lynbrook Owls at Warren King Field. The win sends the Trojans, who are the six-time defending state champions, to the Nassau County Class B semifinals. It took Garden City less than one minute to find the net. Senior captain Catherine Dickinson scored the first goal of the afternoon, quickly attacking the net on the Trojans' first possession. The goal set the tone for the rest of the afternoon.  The Trojans quick, aggressive style proved difficult to stop. Garden City led 5-0 after the first five minutes of play. Town of Hempstead Senior Councilman Anthony J. Santino and Assemblyman Brian Curran stopped by Lynbrook multiple times this week for various ceremonies. On May 11, Santino and Curran, joined by Lynbrook Mayor William Hendrick and Deputy Mayor Alan Beach, saluted the incoming and outgoing officers of the Lynbrook Fire Department at their annual installation dinner. Lynbrook Resident Wins $1 Million on Scratch-Off Ticket

'Wheel of Fortune' scratch-off leads to big payday for Lynbrook resident.

Lynbrook resident Robert Corley collected a big paycheck Wednesday at New York Lottery's NYC Customer Service Center after winning on a "Wheel of Fortune" scratch-off ticket in April. Corley had an oversized prize check worth $1 million presented to him by the lottery's own Yolanda Vega. The 35-year-old claimed the last $1 million prize available on the "Wheel of Fortune" scratch-off game. The game has since been retired. Corley's father purchased the ticket April 23 at the Pop Shop located at 142 Hendrickson Ave. in Lynbrook and opted to give the ticket to Robert to claim. The pair claimed the prize later that same day at the Lottery's Customer Service Center in Garden City. As for why Corley's dad opted to give the ticket to his son to …

Crime Report: CVS Robbed, $65,000 Car Torched

Case Reports Identity Theft — On May 7 at 8:15 p.m., a complainant reported that an unknown person(s) made two unauthorized charges on their Discover credit card. The charges totaled $500. Recovered Stolen Property — On May 8 at 5 p.m., the manager of Hertz Car Rental 56 Horton Ave., reported that an unknown person(s) left a 2011 Toyota Sienna parked in front of Hertz. The vehicle was rented at an upstate Hertz location and not returned. The vehicle was then reported stolen in Suffolk County on April 3.
