Lakeview resident and activist Bea Bayley explains why she's supporting Besson for Malverne school board.
Why I am voting for Sherwyn: As long as I have known Sherwyn he has always been a champion for the children of district 12. He demonstrates this as a father, a coach and as an educator who has been identified by the student body and parents as a valuable mentor. As a conscientious educator, he spoke out when he saw that students were not being afforded the full advantage of a well-rounded education. He spoke out when he saw that fellow teachers were being harassed or forced out. While others have based part of their platform on the aspect of bullying, Sherwyn is the only one who has put his career and livelihood on the line to put an end to it. Despite suffering financially and professionally he continues to speak out against wrongdoing. …

Malvernite asks District 12 residents to join him in voting for Josephine Bottitta and Kathleen Nolan Kasal for school board.
Letter to the Editor: Tomorrow's election is an interesting one in that five people of various backgrounds, skill sets and motivations are running for the two open spots. I personally think it's great that this is not an uncontested race and one with plenty of enthusiasm all around. All candidates bring something to the table. For me, the two candidates best suited for the position based on their experience, reasons for running, and desire for real change are Joey BOTTITTA and Kathleen Nolan KASAL. I recently got to know Joey but have admired her perseverance from afar for her efforts with Project Enroll Now (PEN). BOTTITTA's involvement in the community and hard work with PEN demonstrates she is not afraid of difficult challenges and can…
Lynbrook Fire Chief Anthony "Zemo" DeCarlo endorses Malverne school board hopeful Joann Krudis.
To the Taxpayers of School District 12, I'd like to tell you a bit about Joann Krudis. I have had the distinct pleasure of knowing Joann for the past 7 years when she became part of our Lynbrook Fire Department family. Joann is passionate and hard-working. She rises to a challenge regardless of how big or small the task. I have known her to advocate for what is right even when she knows it might not be popular opinion. Joann has supported our fire department through fundraising and coordinating various events. She would be an asset to any organization, especially the Malverne Board of Education, because of her passion for education and motivation to strive for excellence in all walks of life. I am proud to endorse Joann Krudis for …

President Barack Obama on Wednesday became the first sitting president to announce his support for same-sex marriage.
President Barack Obama openly backed gay marriage during an interview on "Good Morning America" Thursday. "I've always been adamant that gay and lesbian Americans should be treated fairly and equally," Obama told ABC's Robin Roberts. Additionally, on Sunday, Vice President Joseph Biden told NBC's "Meet The Press" that he was personally comfortable with same-sex marriage, according to The Huffington Post. While the President's statement will have little political impact, as such decisions are left to the individual states and courts, Patch wants you to weigh in on this controversial topic.

A letter to the editor from the President of the Long Island Federation of Labor.
The following is from John R. Durso, President of the Long Island Federation of Labor: It is the bedrock of American democracy that every citizen's vote carries equal importance. Whether or not one's vote truly finds expression in the final count is largely impacted by redistricting, a process we go through every 10 years. While the subject typically fails to garner much public attention, insiders know there's a lot at stake. The way that voters are segregated into districts has an enormous influence on who our representatives are, and can ultimately shape public policies for the next decade. Historically, the task of redrawing district lines has been left to the hands of the very politicians whose political futures will be impacted. Too …

Point Lookout resident Donna Pisacano Brown remembers those lost during National Crime Victims' Rights Week.

Thursday, April 26
Dear Editor: As I write this, I write with my heart in honor of National Crime Victims' Rights Week. A heart that knows first hand, what it feels like to have a loved one killed, as well as injured, as a result of a DWI related crash. A heart, that through a local Long Island organization, has connected with the hearts of all too many others who share the same anguish in knowing first hand, the reality of living with such a horrific and senseless loss. Loss that continues to plague our society with ongoing destruction. Destruction, which is PREVENTABLE and the reason that I, among all so many, continue to stand up and speak out loud on this issue. How on April 22, 2012, in honor of National Crime Victims' Rights Week, a small group of …

Concerned Hempstead Town resident Lucille DeFina voices several serious concerns with the town's animal shelter.

The following is from Hempstead Town resident Lucille DeFina. To the Editor, Recently you published an article about the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter scoring high marks on their inspection from the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets. I would like to inform you that this is an inspection that is almost impossible to fail. They merely inspect the basics, such as clean food and water. Publicizing this inspection is an extension of continually misleading and manipulating the public. Due to the pressure that the public has made on the town after the banning of a few rescuers a year-and-a-half ago, the town was forced to implement policies, procedures and programs that have been non-existent at the Hempstead Animal Shelter…

New survey shows technology reigns supreme ... even on the toilet.
A recent study shows that a majority of Americans can't escape the need to use technology, even on the can. 11mark, an integrated marketing service, surveyed 1,000 Americans in October of 2011, with 75 percent of the group admitting they have used their phones while on the toilet. According to a report in the Huffington Post, "Toilet texting is particularly popular among those 28 to 35-years-old, with a reported 91 percent of that age group admitting to the habit." Think men are the biggest culprits? Think again. Perhaps the biggest surprise in the study was the percentage of women who use their phones on the toilet versus men. According to HuffPo: Men and women are pretty much equal when it comes to general usage, though. Approximately …

Saturday, January 28
The United States Department of Agriculture unveiled new child nutrition reforms for school meals this week that include many reforms pushed through Congress last year by Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, D-Mineola. “A healthy student is a successful student – kids can’t do well in school when they’re hungry and tired,” said McCarthy. “I’m so glad and proud that the USDA is going to be implementing many of the reforms that I championed in my committee recently; hopefully we can reduce childhood obesity and improve grades across the nation thanks to these reforms.” According to the USDA, the reforms include: As chairwoman of the Healthy Families and Communities Subcommittee, McCarthy worked to implement child nutrition reform, including efforts to …
