Garden City Girls Lax Tops Lynbrook in Quarterfinals

Big 18-2 victory sends Trojans to Adelphi for semis.

The Garden City Trojans girls lacrosse team's state title defense continued Thursday afternoon with an 18-2 victory over the Lynbrook Owls at Warren King Field. The win sends the Trojans, who are the six-time defending state champions, to the Nassau County Class B semifinals. It took Garden City less than one minute to find the net. Senior captain Catherine Dickinson scored the first goal of the afternoon, quickly attacking the net on the Trojans' first possession. The goal set the tone for the rest of the afternoon.  The Trojans quick, aggressive style proved difficult to stop. Garden City led 5-0 after the first five minutes of play. "I think anytime you can control the game from the beginning, it's [a good thing]," Garden City head …

Long Beach Tops Lynbrook in Boys Lax Playoffs

Marine win sets up date with Plainedge at Hofstra.

The Long Beach Marines boys lacrosse team have made it to Hofstra in every year of head coach Jim Kasper's tenure -- this season will be no different. A 9-6 victory over the Lynbrook Owls on Friday night at Long Beach Middle School sent the Marines back to the Nassau Class B quarterfinals.  "That's our goal every year," Kasper said of playing at Hofstra during the playoffs. As the first half wound down, it looked like the Marines would sail toward the Hofstra date. Connor Sofield's second goal of the evening gave Long Beach a 4-1 lead with 5:58 left in the second quarter.  The goal was Long Beach's fourth unanswered score after Lynbrook had taken an early 1-0 lead. The Owls managed to grab two more goals in nearing the end of the half, but…

Malverne S.D. Defends South Carolina Group's Use of Fields

Says Offense-Defense Combine event complied with school district policy.

Did the Malverne school district violate New York State Education law by allowing a South Carolina-based corporation to use its fields last weekend?  School officials say "No." Although he could not comment specifically on Section 414 of the state law, which states: "For meetings, entertainments and occasions where admission fees are charged, when the proceeds thereof are to be expended for an educational or charitable purpose;" Spiro Colaitis, assistant superintendent for Malverne's District Operations, said the district's legal counsel vetted the request for Offense Defense, a for-profit football corporation from Myrtle Beach, S.C., to host a Combine at the high school fields on May 5 and May 6. "The lawyer said we are in compliance," he…

Lynbrook HS Grad Coaches NYIT Tennis Into NCAA Tourney

Former Owls QB Chris Frusci took over NYIT Bears tennis last summer.

Given his prior athletic history, Chris Frusci’s current position at NYIT in Old Westbury is, at the very least, surprising. The 2004 Lynbrook High School graduate was a member of the Owls football, basketball, and baseball programs, and played each sport for all four years of his high school career before attending Muhlenberg on a football scholarship.   So, it came as a bit of a shock when the three-sport athlete was named head coach of the NYIT men’s and women’s tennis teams last summer. Frusci chalks up the opportunity to being in “the right place at the right time.”  He had been working at NYIT when the school began its tennis program in 2010. Head coach Kelly Waters, not wanting to tackle the task alone, asked him to be her …

On Monday, the #5 Adelphi men's lacrosse team hosted the Yellow Jackets of American International College in a Northeast-10 Conference contest. The Panthers, behind a seven goal performance from senior Joe Vitale, did most of the damage in the third period while the defense held the visitors scoreless in three out of four quarters. When all was said and done, Adelphi came out on the business end of a 14-2 victory. With the win, the Panthers advance to 6-1, 2-1 NE-10 while AIC still searches for their first win at 0-6, 0-3 NE-10.   Vitale, a Lynbrook HS graduate, notched a game high seven goals, four of which came consecutively in the first period.
